Eli D. Cox Hassles Of All The Screaming Fits
There was a corner in the lobby furthest from the door and reception desk. Eli sat in the floor, his knees drawn up to his chest, and his arms wrapped around them. He rocked. He didn’t want to be there. He didn’t like it there at all. It was loud there, and there were people he didn’t know. Most of all, his Mama wasn’t there. Eli missed his Mama most. He kept forgetting that she wasn’t coming back.
Eli rocked harder. Back and forth. Back and forth. Something about the movement was comforting. Back and forth. Back and forth. Then someone kneeled in front of him, and Eli pushed himself further into the corner, away from whoever it was. Eli trained his eyes on his shoelaces. Shoelaces. There was a sad bunny whose ears were too long.
“You have to take these,” the person said, holding out two cups to him. One had water in it, the other had little white pills. The person held it closer to him, trying to get Eli to take them.
Eli rocked harder. Shoelaces. Shoelaces. Then there came a faery…. A groan escaped him, and the person got a little closer.
“Come on, it’s not that bad.”
Eli’s arm shot out, knocking the water and pills out of the person’s hands. The water splashed on them, and the pills bounced across the floor.
“God damn it,” the person muttered. The person grabbed Eli by the shoulder, and Eli yelled, striking out at them. He closed his eyes. Eli smacked them and hit them, and yelled some more. As soon as they backed off, Eli smacked his head. He pulled his own hair.
Why couldn’t people leave him alone? He wanted them to go away. He wanted his Mama.
Mama.
With that thought, Eli scratched at his cheeks, and hit his head against the wall. Again.
And again.
And again.

I break habits Just to fall in love But I do it On designer drugs Theo was dancing down the hallway slightly, another seemingly good day so far. With a water bottle in hand and a smile on his face he earned a few strange looks as he headed towards the first place he'd been when he'd arrived here. That seemed like only a few hours ago. This whole place was so absolutely new to him. Theo was alerted to a repetitive sound as he approached the lobby. His curiosity getting the better of him as usual as he rounded the corner. Just in time to see one of the patients scratch themselves and begin hitting their head on the wall. Again, and again. Again. Theo winced inwardly before hurrying over to the kid, but stopped remembering rapid approaches could scare people.
Theo slowed down, a bit of fear for this person spiked in him. He walked slowly and softly across the floor, ignoring absolutely anyone else but this person. He knew that sometimes the patients like this were sedated, he didn't know this kid at all yet, but that didn't mean he wouldn't try to help him either. Theo noticed some water had spilled, and hadn't been there to know why. But he assumed that this patient didn't like his medication either.
Theo crouched in front of Eli and wore a gentle smile on his face, trying to understand how to help the situation. Body language, and tone of voice could mean a lot in this situation. So he was making notes to be careful already, especially if the patient was capable of lashing out at him. "Hey there... do you like music?" Okay, that could have been a stupid question. No, correction it was, but he had to distract him somehow. Even though medication and sedation could help, he wasn't a fan of either. Theo only took his own medication because it made him feel better. "If you do, you probably won't hear it very well doing that. Look here for a sec, please?" Now he was really trying, and he kept his voice even while he spoke. Trying to make himself sound as inviting to listen to as possible. Theo was doubting himself internally though, he kept a warm smile on his face, and was a safe enough distance away for now. No sudden movements, and he should be fine. But even if he was hurt, he wouldn't be bothered by it.

Eli D. Cox Hassles Of All The Screaming Fits
Then someone was talking, but it felt loud in his head, like every word a balloon popping close to his face. The voice didn’t sound the same as the person trying to give him his medicine. Eli hit his head against the wall again. His head pounded. Boom. Boom. Boom. His head pounded with each word.
“We’re going to have to sedate him,” the first voice said, “before he hurts himself.”
Sedate. Eli knew that word. That word always came with needles and darkness. It would make him sleep. He didn’t want to sleep. What Eli wanted was for everyone to leave him alone, but no one ever did.
Eli made an “Uh” noise. He repeated it over and over again, and as his nails took another swipe at his cheeks, he felt them grow slick with blood.
…you probably won’t hear it very well doing that…
But Eli couldn’t just stop it. He felt like everything was closing in on him. His head hit the wall again. He opened his eyes just a slit to see the two people in front of him. Eli didn’t look at them directly.
“Don’t be a hero, just administer the sedatives,” the other orderly said. Eli could see the other orderly trying to hand Theo a needle. Eli hit head against the wall again as he shrunk away from the two orderlies.
Well. At least he wasn’t scratching at his face anymore.

I break habits Just to fall in love But I do it On designer drugs Theo was trying to get a response out of the kid, and the other orderly was just driving him up the wall. He liked to do things his way and didn't exactly like to be pressured. However, Theo remained calm and gently pushed the other orderly's arm away from him. Turning his head he offered the other orderly his smile which could've been bitter, but it wasn't. "Is that the common method here? Haven't any of you just tried to talk to the people here? Relax, just let me try and talk to him." Theo turned his had away, wincing a bit at the sight of the blood on the kids' cheek. But he stopped swiping at his face eventually. Theo knew he was probably overwhelmed if he was responding this way to their presence. "Eh, do me a favor and give us a bit more space." The statement was directed at the other orderly.
Theo's face changed, it was still inviting but he looked a bit puzzled. He really didn't want this kid to hurt himself, and he'd be in trouble if it went on or escalated. Since he refused to sedate the kid. "Hey, well.. music. .. Do you like the lion king? Simba and all that? I know he likes music." Theo really didn't know why he chose that movie, or that group of music out of all else. Probably because the song Simba sang was just recently stuck in his head.
Theo decided, he'd take a chance, what the hell could go wrong? Sure the kid could get worse and he'd have to sedate him, but he wanted to try this. He'd learned something in college about trying alternatives and distractions. It wasn't like he was embarrassed by this kind of thing anyway, people might think he was weird. He was, but he didn't care.
"I'm gonna be a mighty king, so enemies beware! I'm gonna be the mane event, like no king was before. I'm brushing up on looking down, or working on my roar. Oh I just can't wait to be king! No one sayin' do this, no one saying be here, no one saying stop that, no one saying see here! Free to run around all day, free to do it all my way." Theo was honestly enjoying this, he loved the song so much it was probably ridiculous. He wasn't sure if he should go on, so he should probably wait. But he'd been singing in a key similar to the one on the Disney movie. Ignoring any strange looks he might've gotten while singing the song. One could easily tell he wasn't shy about that at all.

Eli D. Cox Hassles Of All The Screaming Fits
“No, of course not,” Eli heard the other orderly say, “this kid’s nothing like the others.” The orderly leaned forward a little, as if trying to get his point across to Theo. The orderly’s voice lowered, “the kid doesn’t talk. I don’t think he even understands….” And at that moment, Eli felt as though the orderly was too close to him, and he swung his leg out to kick at the orderly, but missed by a wide margin. Before Theo could even ask for more space, the orderly was already moving away, his hands up in defeat. The other orderly slinked away for a moment.
Good. Eli didn’t like him anyway. Eli brought his knees back up to his chest. He still hit his head against the wall, but not quite as hard since the other orderly left. Eli kept his eyes down.
Lion King. His head hit the wall. Simba The wall. I know he likes music.
Simba. Eli did like Simba because Simba was a lion. He was a lion like Aslan. As Theo began to sing, Eli didn’t hit his head against the wall as hard. Eventually, he stopped hitting his head altogether, and just started rocking with his arms wrapped around his knees.
Eli liked that song. Eli relaxed a little, and he sat there in the corner indian style. He still rocked. His right hand opening, closing, opening, closing. There was a low hum from him – not in tune, but an almost content sort of sound.
“Ohgod,” said the other orderly, coming back. The orderly sighed, “Good. Now we’ve just got to get the kid to take his pills.” He handed over two cups to Theo. The two cups were identical to the ones that the orderly had had before.
“Lets see you work more miracles, hot shot.”

I break habits Just to fall in love But I do it On designer drugs Theo frowned a bit when Eli lashed out at the other orderly. Sure he wasn't exactly the nicest person, but lashing out was a problem. He just shrugged at the comment of he kid being different even from the others here. He noticed though, and rather happily too that the kid stopped hitting his head on the wall as Theo had been singing. It seemed he liked it, or was content with it. He though frowned a bit at the comment that the other orderly made. Just because he was confident, didn't mean he was cocky or thought he was some miracle worker. It kind of irked him and he slowly took the two cups from the other orderly. Really, Theo wanted to be rude but he refrained from it. Theo just smiled pleasantly as he returned his gaze to the kid again.
"Hey, if you help me out, I'll help you out. I'll finish the rest of that song, or another one you might like even better if you take these? I know they're not fun to take, but I'll tell you a secret." Theo trailed off and lowered his voice, really playing into it like it was a secret. He leaned in with an inviting smile on his face, trying to hide his mouth from the other orderly, as if he didn't want him to hear it. "I have to take medicine too. Just like you, it makes it easier to function for me. But if you take these, I'll tell you what mine are for. I think it's probably more fun to sing Disney songs than sit here, right? Even reading a book is more fun." Theo's smile widened, he seemed to be enjoying himself rather thoroughly now.
Even though it was a pretty risky situation. He held out just the pill cup to the kid. Keeping the water close to him, and he didn't move fast. He wanted the kid to take them from his hand of his own free will. Theo was trying to show him that he wasn't forceful, and wasn't going to absolutely make him take the pills if he refused. But he'd keep suggesting and offering them. Theo glanced towards the other orderly again, still seeming to be happy when he wasn't much happy with his co-worker. "Doesn't make much sense to expect him to want to take them when you're not trying to be his friend. If he's different from everyone else, then who cares? Find a different way to approach him, not scare the wits out of him, not force him to do something he doesn't want to do. Make him feel like it's okay, and want to take them himself. I'm pretty different, but you don't treat me any differently. He's still a kid, different or not." Theo was still smiling and his tone wasn't low anymore. It didn't say he was angry, but he was a bit upset. Even then it didn't show. Theo returned his gaze back to the kid. Hoping that he'd listen again.
"You know, I don't know your name. I'd really like to. My name's Theo." His lips twitched his smile a bit wider again, actually catching a glimpse of his teeth. He did love people, but he never smiled this much. He was being honest though. Theo wanted to know this kid and help him out, wanted him to want to be helped.

Eli D. Cox Hassles Of All The Screaming Fits
“Have fun,” the orderly said, standing over Eli and Theo.
As Theo leaned in to tell Eli his secret, Eli instinctually pushed back toward the wall. The rocking came back as if to warn that Theo was coming too close to him. Eli looked up at the cup of pills Theo was holding out. Eli slowly reached out. He took the cup, looking down into it, and there were the little white pills. They looked like little eggs. His sister, Smelly used to tell him that pills were eggs, and they would hatch in his stomach and try to get out.
But Mama said they weren’t, and Mama was always right.
Theo talked a lot, even introduced himself and smiled at him. Mama would tell him he should greet Theo appropriately, but Mama wasn’t there. She wouldn’t be coming back.
Eventually, Eli put the cup up, slowly tilting the pills into his mouth like he’d always been told to do. He could almost hear his Mama tell him to throw his head back so the pills were at the back of his throat, and therefore easier to swallow.
Eli didn’t like how the pills felt. They tasted powdery. They were gross. So Eli took a deep breath, and spat really hard. The pills flew out of his mouth, in Theo’s direction. With that, Eli got up, and started walking away from the two orderlies. Except he was woozy.
The floor felt like it was moving under his feet, and he stumbled a little.
“He’s all yours now. Better follow him. He probably has a concussion.” The orderly said as he watched Eli stumble.

I break habits Just to fall in love But I do it On designer drugs The minute the kid took the pills and seemed to be swallowing them, he was honestly really happy. Then he was startled when the kid spit them back towards Theo. Nailing him in the face. Theo couldn't get mad at it, hell if he wasn't trying to get him to take his meds, he probably would've laughed at himself. But the orderly irked him already. "Yeah well, I'm not bothered by helping someone." With that he got up and jogged lightly to catch up with the kid. Reaching out to catch him as he stumbled with a concerned look. He really didn't want to have check him for a concussion, or hoped he didn't have one. They sucked, Theo knew that better than anyone. "Hey, kid. Slow down a bit. Why'd you spit those out? You were doing a really good job. I was really proud of you." He didn't touch the kid, he just kept his arm hovered nearby in case he fell.
He didn't want him to fall over. Theo also knew that his best friend would be coming today, and would need to hurry up. Usually he took his time with this, but even then he noticed it would be difficult. He hoped his mom could deal with Link for a little while. Maybe he'd bring the kid with him, see if he liked animals. It wasn't like Link was untrained. He loved kids. "Hey, can you tell me your name? Or should I just give you a nickname? Because I kind of like calling you Kid. Oh, hey I have a really cool surprise coming today. Wanna be the first one to see it? I bet you'll like it." Theo honestly didn't know if the kid would like it or not. He just needed a distraction, and another chance to offer him his meds.

Why’d you spit those out?
Eli made a noise that sounds a lot like hmm. He repeated it a few times as he continued to walk. He spat them out because he didn’t like them. He didn’t like them at all. Eli wasn’t going to take them. No one could make him. End. Of. Story.
Eli stopped walking for a moment , and turned toward Theo when Theo asked him what his name was. He lifted his hand to his face, and opened and closed it next to his ear. Eli looked up at the ceiling.
“Hmm.” Eli’s hands still opened and closed. He tilted his head. “Hmm,” Is all that came out though even though his named was just on the tip of his tongue. Eli glanced at his hand as Theo continued talking. He blinked, looking surprised at the drying blood. Eli then wiped his hand on the front of his shirt before he looked back up in Theo’s general direction.
Surprise…
Eli blinked as the word, and rocked a little where he stood.
Would you like to be the first one to see it?
Eli thought about it for a moment. Surprises. Like when Smelly brought home presents for him when she went on trips with her friends? Eli always liked those surprises.
I bet you’ll like it
He stood there very still, and then he nodded.

I break habits Just to fall in love But I do it On designer drugs Theo watched the boy curiously as he wiped the blood off his cheek. Making a note to take care of the injuries if he was allowed to. The though of sedation was really negative to him, but if it was absolutely necessary he may be forced to use it. Theo hated being forced to do anything he disliked, as well so he could understand the kid's apprehension to taking pills. Really he did want to help him, Theo just didn't know how. Maybe he could offer something in exchange for the kid taking the pills. A reward system sort of, that was something most people enjoyed. Throughout life, its was considered a motivator. Theo smiled slightly at the kid as he looked up and nodded to his question. Knowing now it was completely wrong that he couldn't speak or understand language.
"Hm. Well that's alright. You don't have to tell me I guess. I'm not mad though....After we go see the surprise, will you let me clean your cheek? I won't touch you if you don't want me to, but this time it might be a good idea. Since I know you understand me, you can just nod yes or no, okay? If you want, you can take my hand and I'll show you where the surprise is. But you don't have to, just stay by me, I want you to see this." Theo was talking to him casually, not in a condescending manner either. This was a kid, not an animal, not a pet. He didn't need to be talked to like he was a child, because even if he was different he was still older than a child.
Theo was giving him choices, he could make them himself. If he really didn't want to be touched at all, that was totally fine. He wouldn't force him, and wouldn't sedate him unless he was significantly trying to hurt himself. Not just scratching and head banging, but more serious. Not that it wasn't serious for the kid to do that. But, he wasn't sure what he meant. Theo glanced at the clock on the wall and felt a bit of panic, his mom's would be waiting now. They told him the estimated time and that was ten minutes ago. So his face flushed a bit. "Ohh boy, looks like I was late by a little bit. I'm sure the surprise will be excited to see us too. We should hurry, this surprise is really big and really important." Theo winked at the boy with a kind smile as he offered his hand. It was up to the kid to take it, he was okay without him taking his hand.

Eli D. Cox Hassles Of All The Screaming Fits
He tilted his head to one side, then the other as he thought about the question. Eli grazed his fingers over his cut cheeks, making a little face, but in the end, he didn’t answer. No sound. No movement. No nodding. Then at the talk of taking Theo’s hand, Eli leaned away. He shook his head, and kept shaking his head. His eyes were trained on the floor where there were scuff marks from people’s shoes. Eli clasped his hands together tightly. His nails dug into the top of his hand.
But Eli stayed standing beside Theo.
…looks like I was late…
Eli shook his head again, making his face. He didn’t like that word. Eli hated being late. He hated being early. Actually, he just wanted to be some place or do something exactly when he was supposed to. Not too long ago, he used to have a set schedule. Every hour was filled with something. He missed that. He liked that because he knew exactly what was going to happen next.
Eli twirled his index finger in a curl at the nape of his neck, and gave it a nice tug. He did that a few times until he started following Theo.
What was that thing Mama used to say? Better late than never?
Or something…

I break habits Just to fall in love But I do it On designer drugs Theo bit his tongue carefully and just smiled a bit, retracting his hand. He shrugged a bit, he wouldn't touch the kid as he said. So Theo began walking , leading him out the doors of the lobby and down the path to the front of the building. There was a red car sitting and idling in front. Two women sat in the front, and the head of his dog popped up in the window. Link began barking happily, causing the women to stop their conversation and smile at Theo. He raised his hand to wave at them. The woman on the driver side got out and stood leaning against the car. Theo couldn't stop smiling, he was being mindful though, he made sure to stay beside the kid. He wouldn't lose him, he had his priorities straight.
His other mom just leaned her head out the window with a wide smile. Calling out a greeting to Theo before retreating back to her seat. He didn't mind if she didn't get out, they were probably ready to head home anyway. Theo stopped a few feet from the car as the mom standing outside moved to embrace him. "Heya Theo. See you've got a friend already. Anyway, Link's food and bowls are in the trunk. Everyone already misses you." Theo laughed slightly returning the embrace before pulling away. He glanced down at the kid following him.
"Yup, new friend. He seems to like Lion King, so that makes him cool in my book. Anyway, I'll let Link out and grab his food and bowls. Shouldn't be too hard. I really appreciate you guys driving all the way out here." His mom seemed to laugh, both of them did. She waved at him and slapped him on the shoulder playfully. Moving to open the door, the retriever hopped out of the car in reserved excitement. Bounding straight to Theo and the kid he was with, jumping up on Theo carefully. Theo caught his dog with a laugh, petting him on the head, before silently asking him to sit down and stay by the kid as he moved to get Link's things from the trunk. "You and mom have a safe trip back, alright? Call me. I love you guys!" Theo was holding a large back of dog food on one shoulder, and the bowls in the other hand. His mom closed the trunk for him before kissing him on the cheek. "We will. You be careful and remember to take your meds. Take care, sweetie." With that his mom joined his mom in the car. Both buckling up and waving at him before they drove away. He knew it was a short visit, but it had to be short.
Theo finally turned to look at Link and the kid, the dog was leaning up against the other boy's leg, staring up at him. Asking for attention with pleading eyes, which made Theo laugh quietly. Link's head tilted toward Theo, half expectant for a command. He turned his attention instead to the boy. "Well kid, meet my best friend, Link." He seemed to beam at the mention of his dog's name. The dog's ears tilted forward, his tail wagging as he seemed ready to get on his face. Theo chuckled again, it'd been a few weeks since he'd seen Link. Boy did he ever miss him too. Theo inhaled softly and looked to he kid once more. "Want to help me out? Carry his bowls to my room with me? Then we can play with Link for awhile, if you'd like." Theo smiled softly as he reached out with the bowls in hand. Hoping that the kid would understand what he meant, and not throw these at him. Not that he imagined he would but he didn't know either. Link finally stood up, wagging his tail as he moved away a bit from the kid, but he looked back at him. Link would carry his bowl if asked to do it, But Theo figured to ask the kid first, and give him something to do.

Eli D. Cox Hassles Of All The Screaming Fits
The first thing Eli noticed when he walked outside was the head of a puppy peeking out the window from the backseat. The puppy barked, and it made Eli smile as he stepped toward the car. That was when the woman got out though. Eli dropped his chin to his chest, shaking his head as he took a couple of steps back. Eli didn’t wave back at the woman. Instead, he turned his back to her. It didn’t take him long before he was peeking back over his shoulder at the dog as Theo continued to talk to the women.
Eli watched the puppy get out of the car, and when it started walking toward him, Eli moved away ever so slightly. Mama never let them have a puppy. The only puppy he’d ever seen that big was his neighbour’s puppy, and that puppy was mean. He bit Eli once because Eli wanted to get his ball out of the yard.
The puppy leaned against his leg, but he didn’t jump up or try to bite him. Eli reached down, giving the puppy a tentative pet on the head. He liked the colour of the puppy. It reminded him of Aslan. Aslan was yellow. Yes, Eli liked that very much.
Want to help me out?
Eli didn’t look at Theo, but he took the bowls from him. Eli was careful that he didn’t touch Theo. Then he started to follow closely after the puppy, his hand out to graze its fur.

I break habits Just to fall in love But I do it On designer drugs Theo watched the kid's attention drawn to the dog of all else. It was curious, he had to wonder if he'd ever been around them before. Theo smiled slightly as he adjusted the large bag of dog food on his shoulder. Link seemed to really like the kid already, whining when he stopped the tentative pet. Thumping his tail against the ground still happily. Theo whistled and Link's head immediately grew attentive as he swiftly moved from his seat by the kid. Standing closely by Theo's leg, a result of his training. "Alright, well we're going to my room for a few minutes. I can show you a trick Link knows. Then you can try it if you'd like. He already really likes you."
Theo smiled again. It was true, Link was a pretty easy-going dog, but rarely did he just walk up so casually to someone like that. He was so hung up on staying beside Theo. Maybe he just had a thing for liking kids. He shrugged, adjusting the bag on his shoulder, leading the kid and dog towards his room. Making sure to keep the kid in his peripherals so that he didn't wander off on him. Not that it seemed he would just yet. Theo seemed to be catching on about the difference of this kid with others, but it didn't bother him in the slightest. If anything it made him more interesting to be around.
Theo reached into his pocket and pulled out his keys as they finally entered a different building. His room wasn't too far from the doors, so he led the trio to a door, placing the key inside and unlocking it. Stowing his keys back in his pocket as he held the door open for the Kid and Link, who walked right on in to his room. Theo entered himself, setting the dog food down out of the way of the door, as per usual of him. "Well.. We won't be here long. Unless you want to stay here for a bit. It's okay if you come visit me too, okay? Anyway, are you ready to see a trick?" Theo was smiling again, and rather widely too. He loved showing people how smart Link was. It wasn't even because of him, but he was clearly proud of his dog.

Eli D. Cox Hassles Of All The Screaming Fits
Eli followed a couple of paces behind, holding the bowls in his hands. He was careful not to drop them because he was scared he’d break them. Mama used to get so upset when he’d accidentally dropped dinner dishes on the floor. He could almost hear her say, “you have to be more careful Eli.” Then he would try really hard next time because the sound of clattering plates scared him anyway.
When they got to a door, Eli lingered outside of it as Theo put the puppy food onto the floor. He still held the bowls, cradling them in his arms. He made no move to go inside initially until Theo asked him if he wanted to see the puppy do a trick.
Eli moved past Theo carefully, making sure the Theo didn’t touch him. Eli didn’t look up. Instead, he trained his eyes on his shoes [which were untied.] He was still holding onto the bowls, but he was getting tired of them. Eventually he let the bowls slip from his hands onto the carpeted floor. They bounced .
….and when was Theo going to show him that trick? He really wanted to see a trick. Eli also really wanted to play with the puppy.
