Tommy, nervous, wrings his hands in his lap. He puts on a smile though. He scratches his temple, then looks up at the interviewer. “Honestly, I needed a change of scenery, Ma’am.” Tommy says in a southern drawl. He shrugs as he leans forward, “I’ve been doin’ the same thing in the same place for almost ten years. It’s ‘bout time I get a little bit of fresh air and expand my horizons.” And what was your position before applying to the Rehabilitation center, and how do you think your experience will help you here? “Well,” Tommy said, “I worked up in a small town fire department in Mississippi. I am dual trained in fire apparatuses and Emergency Medical Services.” This is where Tommy smiles again for good measure. You can never smile enough in a job interview. Tommy thinks it shows your enthusiasm. “My certifications include graduating from the Academy “ He clears his throat, “the fire academy that is… and I’ve got my EMT-Intermediate certifications. I’m able to administer Advanced Life Support.” He pauses, shrugging, “Knowin’ about Emergency Services is always a good trade, I think, when you’re workin’ with at-risk teenagers. It certainly won’t hinder my work here or nothing.” Do you, Mr. Walker, have any personal experience with the illnesses, addictions, or disabilities the patients of this facility are admitted for? “That depends on what you mean by personal experience,” Tommy looks down into his hands for a moment. There’s a sigh on his lips, then he looks back at the interviewer, “Ma’am, I cannot personally say I’ve had a debilitatin’ illness like some of these kids do, but I’ve been real close to people who have.” A sad look passes over Tommy’s face, “I came to realise that you can only help people who want to help themselves. I don’t believe in lost causes or nothin’, but when someone gets somethin’ in their head it’s mighty hard to change it.” Tommy chews the inside of his bottom lip. Once he realises what he’s doing, he stops, and glances back up with a small smile. “But at the same time the kids are here. So on some level I feel like they want to be helped. And if they don’t, well, I’m still here until they do. And if I could help change just one person’s life for the better, that would be enough for me.” All staff must be willing and able to live in the center, and must be on call throughout the night. Would you be willing to do this? Tommy laughs a little, nodding. “Yeah, course, I’m used to workin all hour of the night and days on end.” Thank you, Mr. Walker. “Thank you for your time, Ma’am.” Tommy shakes the interviewer’s hand then heads out. White Springs Rehabilitation Centre For Teens Secondary Interview For Employment Mr. Walker, you’re a very promising candidate, but I’ve noticed you said during your last interview that you were dual trained for fire and medic work. I’m afraid you won’t be paid anywhere close to your previous salary, and you’re grossly over qualified to be an orderly here. Tommy sighs, looking away from the interviewer. “Yes, Ma’am, I understand that. It’s not about the money. Besides, I get room and board here, and I was thinkin’ I don’t need as much money to live off of if I ain’t got to pay rent. And if you’re worried I’ll undermine my authority figures, I can understand that, but I never would. I’ve got too much repect, and I was raised better than that. I can and will take orders from my superiors with no problem unless the request is morally wrong.” Very well, Mr. Walker, as long as you’re aware that your skills are useful to us, you will not be paid more than the starting wage of the other orderlies here at the center. “Yes Ma’am. Entirely understandable.” Now that we have that we’ve come to an understanding, I’d like to officially welcome you to the staff, Mr. Walker. You may move into your staff apartment on Tuesday when it’s ready for you. Tommy can’t help but smile. This is exactly what he needs. To get away from everything and everyone he knew back at home. “Thank you, Ma’am. You will not be disappointed.” Personality At first, Tommy can be a little reserved when he meets people. It’s not because he’s shy, though that’s exactly what he tells people. Tommy first and foremost observes people to see how they’ll react to him. He can be sarcastic sometimes, and he can certainly be a big ole goofball. He likes to make sure people are good and kind before he starts showing his true colours. These days, he doesn’t have the time to waste on those who won’t accept him the way he is. He’s very empathetic, and enjoys helping people. Tommy gets satisfaction out of saving people whether it’s from fires or themselves, and sometimes that can get him in a lot of trouble. He had to learn the hard way that you can’t save everyone; it’s a lesson he’s still trying to learn. Tommy can be tight-lipped about his past, and the circumstances around why he came to White Springs in the first place. He doesn’t speak about his past relationships. It’s simply too fresh and painful at the moment. Despite being sweet and caring, he can be quite driven and determined. He’s not afraid to work for things since he’s been doing that all his life. And if need be, tommy can certainly be aggressive. He will not tolerate a bully. Ever. Lastly, he can be relatively forgetful, always wondering where the hell he put his pen or keys… Brief History Tommy was born to a low income family in Southern Mississippi. He was often bullied as a small child because he had the wrong clothes, the wrong shoes, but what could a boy do when he was wearing the hand-me-downs of his older brothers? He used to get into fights when he was a kid. His father was the type of man who wanted to know why he crying – he should have hit the bullies back, and harder than they’d hit him. As Tommy got older, and his peers grew interested in the opposite sex, Tommy didn’t have any of those feelings. He liked other boys, and he wrestled with his sexuality for years, being in a strict bible belt town. He had a few boyfriends over the years. None of which were very important, and none of which he wanted to introduce to anyone. Tommy took the written and agility tests for the fire department for the first time when he was 18. He failed them, and continued trying (while he worked dead end jobs) until he was 21. While on duty, Tommy met Shane, the guy who changed everything. Tommy met Shane by pulling him out of his crushed car. Unbeknownst to Tommy, Shane’s accident wasn’t an accident at all, but rather a suicide attempt during a very violent mood swing. Shane was bipolar, rapidly cycling through moods, and on most days Tommy didn’t know which way was up or down. Their relationship turned violent quickly with Shane always starting fights. Eventually just had to get away from it all when time after time after time Shane wouldn’t get treatment. If one of them didn’t leave, someone was going to get hurt. Badly.
